Shortly after the first of the year I had to place my mother in a nursing home. This was a very emotional and difficult decision. No child ever wants to place their parent in a nursing home but sometimes the time comes when you realize you can no longer adequately and safely care for them in their own home. The sadness of that decision prevails.
On our trip home from Washington DC, our US departure city, we stopped at the Flight 93 Memorial in Shanksville Pennsylvania. Though the memorial is still in the process of continued growth and development it was an emotional site, similar to visiting many of the memorials in Washington DC and Ground Zero in New York City. Those courageous passengers did their best to protect our country even though they had not signed on to serve.
In June we traveled to our capitol, Washington DC and my family came to the end of an era our Coast Guard era. My brother retired, he was our last remaining family member that was actively serving in United States Coast Guard. I was happy for him but it was also sad, we had come to the end of our era as the Coast Guard family. It was also extremely sad because both of my parents whom are so very proud of our family’s military service were unable to attend due to health issues.
From those highs and happiness I fell back down again. In the fall my uncle passed away and my presumably extremely healthy husband very unexpectedly had a heart attack! Being stunned and scared barely described my feelings at that time, which also of course canceled some travel plans.
Tomorrow we will all begin a new trip; and you are coming along even if you don't like to travel and even if you feel you can't afford to travel. We are all going on a year long journey around the sun. For some of us it will mean we will need a wide range of clothing. Get the warm clothes for the winter months ready, the rain gear for the rainy seasons and breezy light clothing for the tropical months. Many of us will also need insect repellent and of course sunscreen. So now I am hoping for the up-cycle again as we begin 2013.
It is an educational adventure, we can choose to enjoy the ride or we can just struggle to get by.
Happy 2013 and enjoy your trip! It is a once in a lifetime trip, there is no going back. So to everyone I wish you a Happy and Healthy New Year continue to travel explore and enjoy our amazing world.
